in the thick of the evening rush the wheaton station forced to shut down for a few hour tonight. not the first time it's happened in recent months. fox 5's roby chavez back with the story. >> it all started saturday when the elevator went out and 16 passengers were stuck inside. today it was the escalators. passengers complained about constant problems at the station with escalators and elevators out, an impossible climb they say and today everything was out. >> we had to go through the trains. >> reporter: a major commuter nightmares a the wheaton metro station closed several hours. the gates were shut and riders detoured because there is no way down into the tunnel. wheaton passengers are fed up. >> half the time they can't get all three escalators working and the elevator working at the same time. so when i found out the station was closed, i was not the least bit surprised. >> reporter: riders were bussed around the wheaton station on shuttles. the problem? metro says all of its escalators and elevators are out of service at the station. >> the shuttle bus is going take forever.

house in wheaton. they said they found four more devices which they removed from the house and safely detonated. little by little, we're learning more and more about how this hostage incident played out. this is what the lobby of the discovery building looked like today after that police takedown of a suspect in the hostage situation. it all came down yesterday around lunch time. 1:00 p.m. police descend on the discovery channel headquarters in silver spring. an armed man takes three people hostage. chief tom manger said he had a feeling it was not going to end well. >> he had a wide range of emotions. he was up, he was down, he would come down a little sometime. we weren't making progress. >> reporter: the suspect, james jay lee, threatened to kill the hostages, threatened to kill himself. lee's weapons. two guns. they turned out to be starter pistols. they make noise but they don't shoot bullets. attached to his body, two small propane tanks, and two pipe bombs. >> the explosive devices that he had could have done significant damage to that lobby area and certainly would have been l

. the last station i wanted to mention was wheaton. all of these will be back up and running on tuesday morning at 5:00 a.m. >> no labor day break for some virginia dmv employees. the agency will be open on monday on the holiday. they are trying to catch up on the backlog of cars licenses but on hold because of a computer -- driver's licenses put on hold because of a computer glitch gov. bob mcdonnell has ordered an independent review of the situation. law enforcement officers in six states are working together this weekend to catch drunk drivers. the effort began yesterday. maryland and virginia state police are among the agencies already in place. we want to return to our top story this friday. hurricane earl is weakening, but the effect is still being felt up and down the east coast. we go back to our meteorologist adam caskey in ocean city, maryland. good to see you again. >> we are on the south end, and this is one location famous for bigger waves. there is a big one coming in. big curlers come around. nobody allowed in the water right now. we could see waves slightly bigger than w

problems started when the escalators and the elevator here at the wheaton metro station suddenly broke yesterday and metro had to shut them down. this is cellphone video shot inside the metro elevator. they were trapped in there for several minutes and tell metro personnel got them out. by 5:45 p.m. yesterday kamal three elevators and escalators had broken down and metro decided to close the station. been around 7:00, according to one passenger, the train suddenly stopped at the whaeton station. they got about halfway up the escalator. but people started screaming at us and told us to -- >> people started screaming at us and told us to get back on the train. >> officials do not believe the passengers were at in any danger, but it is investigating why the train operator stopped at the wheaton station. it is something we will have to follow up on with our personnel. >> metro also says it apologizes for any inconvenience and confusion last night. but they also go on to say that they had no knowledge that any engineer or metro employee ever told a passenger they were in danger while

wheaton. we should see a slow decay of the storm, but still a major hurricane at this time, a category 3 with a maximum sustained wind of 125 miles an hour, gusting up to 155. it is 941 millibars in pressure. this is the water vapor imagery from the satellite. this shows midland upper level mr. in hemisphere. the green. that is a lot of moisture around the center of circulation. there's very dry air in there that is beginning to get wrapped upper, the orange area. it is moving into areas of very dry air. also, stronger upper level winds, which will cut apart and retain somewhat. it still remains a major hurricane as it goes north and buses along the eastern u.s. coast. it will be from the carolinas up to the delmarva peninsula where we are watching it. a little on the eastern shore of maryland, delaware, and virginia. some wind gusts at 40 or 50 miles an hour here and there with a few rain squalls moving on shore. locally, as of now it should not have much of the impact. if there's a shift in the track, the impact could change for us. sunny and hot the rest of this week. the t

explosives inside a room he rented at a house in wheaton. he lived inside the home on kimberly drive near connecticut avenue. the s.w.a.t. team members evacuated neighbors during their search. then took away several boxes. police found four explosives inside his room and they successfully detonated all of them. neighbors have described lee as a quiet man who kept to himself. now take a look at this. this is an exclusive photo over what appears to be the hostages in the middle of all the action. it has taken high above the scene, looking down. police told those folks to lie down on the ground until everything was clear. the chief manger of montgomery county police says lee repeatedly told negotiators he was ready to die. federal authorities arrested him back in 2003 for human smuggling in california. he also served time after being arrested for protesting in front of the discovery channel headquarters in 2008. in the newsroom, elaine reyes, news4. >> we'll hear from some of the people near the discovery building who took the photos and witnessed the event. that will be coming up at 5:00. >

inside this house on kimberly street in wheaton. off of pliers mill road where they found the four additional devices. it's the last-known address for james lee. the neighbors say the only thing that stood out about lee is the passion for feeding birds in the backyard. one neighbored that it attracted rats and complained to the owner of the house. the police say that lee brought backpacks and boxes into the lobby of the discovery channel where he took the hostages and inside, they found other devices, ski masks, batteries and a second starter pistol. today, ab executive with the discovery singled out the security guard who was held hostage and praised him for being a calming influence and assisting with the negotiations. you may recall when police were talking about the incident yesterday, they knew a shot was fire and the couldn't confirm that any bullets were fired. someone heard a shot or shot. now we know why. it was a starter pistol shooting blanks and they're also looking for a car that they believe belongs to mr. lee but we don't have a description of that vehicle, shawn. >>

. investigators today searched a residence in wheaton linked to james lee. there they discovered even more devices. >> and four additional devises of which we can tie the individual to right now were obtained from the residence and subsequently successfully detonated remotely from the residence and from any other areas of life safety issues here in the county. >> reporter: when lee walked into the discovery building with four makeshift explosives attached to his body, he carried also two boxes and backpacks. in his hand was a small device with a large antenna. that fueled fears he might try to activate bombs remotely. police also discovered two guns, two ski masks and a number of batteries at the scene. >> both weapons have turned out to be starter pistols. >> reporter: bomb squads worked throughout the night to dispose of the other devices inside the discovery building. it was officially cleared by 4:00 a.m. >> the information that i received from the bomb squad was that had he been able to detonate those devices they would have been lethal, certainly to him. >> reporter: montgomery count
